Your Berlin summer guide

Because I keep getting emails, tweets or comments on here with questions on how to do Berlin like a local (and not like your parents), I compiled some of my favourite places where you’re very likely to find me on weekends. I use Google Maps to “star” places as that makes it easy to rediscover places you love and to see when you’re in the area. Highly recommend that method also when you’re travelling!

My phone tells stories: One spring I wasn’t aware of the fall

I’m struggling a bit to find my routine at the moment because there is none, the only constant is the number of balls in the air that I sometimes manage to juggle better than at other times. I spend about one-third of my time in an office with other humans, one-third traveling and the rest at home at my desk. The latter is currently (and now in particular!) driving me nuts, but fingers crossed it’s a phase that will pass soon.

Anyway, back to the reason for this post: A colourful recap of the last few weeks powered by my photo roll. I was at the Leipzig bookfair and if you’re German and into books, here’s a selection of reads that I’ve either just finished or that are piling up on my bedside table and don’t get the attention (and time) they deserve.

Soft skin

My friend Anne is a mind-blowingly beautiful human being, inside and out. We’ve grown up just 20 miles from each other in western Germany but somehow only really started hanging out in Berlin. Unbelievable, I know. She’s an actress and I’ve been trying to convince her to maybe, perhaps, pretty please, think about modelling too because her eyes tell so many stories. Her mouth also says very wise things about life that always either inspire or calm me down. Thanks for that, girl. Anyway, Anne and I finally got up to that long-awaited shoot on a hazy Berlin Saturday in what still feels like winter – and here’s the result.

My phone tells stories: Winter magic

Boom, it’s nearly March! And March means it can’t be long til summer. Take note, Berlin skies! The last couple of months somehow managed to be the close-to-perfect mix of work and play, action and chill, dance moves and naps and home and travel on a silver plate. Yeah, that’s a first, I know. I was with my parents over Christmas, took long walks with the dog around Laacher See lake (which I just read a rather interesting article on by accident, not sure my parents are aware of that “imminent danger”), was offline in Norway, worked non-stop in January, got lost and found in Istanbul (and then again, and again) and drove a car again alongside Portugal‘s coast after a very long time (and then got pulled over by the police with Paul Kalkbrenner in full blast, rockstar game strong).

My phone tells stories: November sun and slow afternoons

Hey fluffy dogs. Hey lazy weekends. Hey colours. Hey autumn. Hey Germany. The last few weeks of this year have been (and are) filled with sleepy Saturdays and cosy jumpers whenever possible. One of the nicest trips has been exploring the Sächsische Schweiz area (which translates to something weird like Saxon Switzerland apparently) which is three hours south of Berlin and oh so beautiful. We went hiking, breathed in some fresh mountain air, jumped through the woods and tried very hard not to fall off the – very Instagrammable – rocks. Mission accomplished I’d say.

I’m starting to think that perhaps autumn in Berlin is even more magical than summer. In a rare outing to Müggelsee and Neu-Venedig last weekend, I finally took a couple of snaps again just for the fun of it. Seriously, look at these colours! Some days literally leave no time to just stop and breathe at the moment, so doing just that and leaving all the questions, occasional confusion (well, let’s scratch the occasional) and the loose ideas on my desk for an afternoon was heavenly. So, without further ado, this is what my current favourite place on earth looks like in autumn. Sorry for the few words, I just wanted to say hi quickly and show you fifty shades of orange. ❤
